A National Institute Of Music, Dance And Drama
India's premier institution for music ('sangeet'), dance ('natak') and
the performing arts, Sangeet Natak Akademi is more a resource centre than
a museum, with a large audio-visual archive.
An autonomous organisation funded by the Government devoted to the
promotion of the performing arts of India, the Akademi bestows honours
annually on outstanding artists in the field of performing arts.
The Akademi arranges performances by renowned veterans as well as by
talented artists of the younger generation, through training programmes,
award of scholarships, documentation, etc. The Akademi is managed by a
General Council, supported by the Executive Board, which exercises
direction and control over the affairs of the Akademi.
A gallery also displays an expensive collection of folk and classical
musical instruments, masks and costumes, while its library holds all sorts
of rare and otherwise unobtainable volumes.
