Lakhi Banjara also known as Lakhi Singh, the man who had
performed the last rites of the martyred Sikh Guru Teg Bahadur built this
Gurdwara in 1732.
Legend Behind Gurdwara Rakab Ganj
The legend says that the body of the Guru was driven away by Lakhi Singh
and a follower of the Guru to his residence. They cremated the body on a
pile of sandalwood and simultaneously set the whole house on fire. Later
they put the ashes in an urn and buried it on that spot only. Later
Gurdwara Rakab Ganj was built at this spot.
The Gurdwara is so named because there used to live a colony of stirrup
makers and sellers in this area before it was built - hence 'Rakab' or
stirrup and 'Ganj' or market. This is a typical Sikh Gurdwara, and its
exquisite white building with prominent domes is worth a visit.
