Conceived as a non-profit, government-run organization to
promote emerging artists in India, Lalit Kala Akademi hosted its very
first show in 1958. The Akademi holds the prestigious Triennale India, in
which artists from about 50 countries participate, and also the National
Exhibition of Photography and Art.
The
gallery is simply huge with three floors and exhibition spaces that are
never vacant. In fact, it's so huge that the works of many painters and
sculptors are on display at the same time. One of the reasons why most
struggling artists always head for this Akademi is that it does not charge
the usual 33% commission for works sold that private galleries do.
Just like all other art galleries in Delhi, private as
well as government-run, the most interesting stimulating months for the
art connoisseur are those from September to March.
